“Gus,” Walter says into the headset while gesturing toward the north at a black figure moving across the evening sky, “is that what I think it is?”

Oxerion appears over the terminal in wobbled flight, heading for the helicopter. He glides in an uncoordinated pattern on stiff, rickety wings, but he is still able to blow flames at Walter’s helicopter. With Walter’s expert handle of the controls, the fire misses them by a few feet.

The concrete floor of the runway crackles the instant Oxerion crashes into the ground. He roars in anger, breathes fire on everything around him, and orders his minions to trample and kill everything in their path. Baronyx launches his red titanic body at the black beast, resolute to keep his promise.

The two dragons gnarl and claw at each other, baring their sharp teeth. Their long, charcoal nails scratch the leather surface of their skins, slicing the thick scales. Fire roars across the sky and on the ground below, creating plumes of thick gray smoke rising into the night. Oxerion flaps his weak wings clumsily, and they betray him often enough that Baronyx uses them to his advantage. With all his weight, Baronyx clasps his claws onto his older brother’s limbs and pulls him down to the earth, disrupting his momentum.

“He’s fighting him off!” Katarina shouts. “Baronyx is fighting Oxerion!”

Everyone watches the colossal battle as Walter rises to a safe distance.

“I don’t understand.” Patricia says into the headset.

Another blaze of fire spews dangerously close to the helicopter blades, and Walter jerks the handles backwards. “The spell didn’t work. We can’t just stay in the air. I know a port down south we can make in ten minutes.”

“We can’t land around here. How far inland can you fly?” Patricia shouts.

“On this bird? It’s got a full tank. I can make it to Nevada. Anything further, and I need to stop and refuel.”

“I’ll buy us some time.”

A red glimmer shines from Patricia’s eyes as she mutters foreign words under her breath. She extends her fingers out in a circular fashion, as if wrapping them around an invisible ball on her lap. Gustavo, Katarina, and Kevin watch as a silver glow surrounds Patricia, illuminating her frame in the back of the helicopter. She repeats the controlling spell three times, with each instance her tone growing angrier as if her stern voice will force the spell to execute. While her muscles weaken and her hands struggle to keep their fingers stretched out over the imaginary orb, Patricia reads the spell one more time, almost shouting, and the two dragons finally fall asleep.

After she finishes speaking and the radiance around her diminishes, she drops her arms and leans back in her seat. She breathes erratically as sweat drips down her forehead. “We need to get out into the desert,” she says in a strained voice, her face wincing at the onslaught of nausea. “Go somewhere where the dragons won’t cause any more deaths, and where Regina and I can fight them without worrying about killing people, until we figure out what to do.
